* o" s- w6 _" ILike its predecessor and its closest French competitors, the Megane is suspended by a relatively simple torsion beam at the rear. In terms of handling, the Megane is a marked improvement over its predecessor. The steering still feels a tad inert but it is at least better weighted than in the old car. Body control is just about average though thanks to the softly sprung suspension but on the upside, ride quality is commendable for a car without a multi-link suspension set up at the rear. Ride quality is excellent to keep occupants happy. The suspension goes over bumps with aplomb isolating the occupants from road irregularities. Ride has always been a strength in French cars but Renault's regular chassis engineers can certainly learn a thing or two on how to set up the Megane's chassis like on the RS from their Renaultsport counterparts.

The Golf's multi-link rear suspension means that it ought to be dynamically better than the Megane. The 1.2 TSI's road holding manners are what we've come to expect of a Golf since the Mk V model. The base Golf is a highly capable handler despite it being more of a family car rather than a tarmac scorcher. We love if for its direct and confidence inspiring steering and its excellent body control. The Golf's composed and well-balanced handling gives you the confidence to drive it harder than the Megane here. This doesn't come at the expense of ride comfort too - the 1.2 TSI's suspension soak up bumps admirably at all speeds, giving its occupants a well controlled ride that is not too far behind what the pliant Megane can offer. 9 ]: N+ H( C3 [
