[读书笔记] 丁尼生 《尤利西斯》 节选

本杰明格雷厄姆八十岁生日爬梯上对儿孙们做了个演讲,演讲最后以这一段诗作结尾。这首诗是写老年的,不过我看了后觉得很受激励,就抄录下来以作自勉:5 L/ ^9 o% [! G% Q/ a

% A' E4 \4 S, ?5 S% B$ q'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
2 [! C, P6 H% s" |, B! k + T( X/ w2 R7 D
Push off, and sitting well in order smite# o% w, K' i( Q8 I' Y. z- d

5 ~) h9 S5 H" {4 N" t0 C$ Z' q" wThe sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
- S; q4 w& i0 }4 I1 P2 t + R+ P* h4 p, j& z9 U# F& z" d
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
! X+ D; S- ]( V4 T6 A& m+ |8 I8 I6 t 8 d$ O7 f0 P4 n* L* X1 w
Of all the western stars,until I die.
% e% I% o" {# `8 h8 e) ` & |) @# @, P3 p! X* Y; A- b
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down;

/ b$ k5 N& n  e$ ?, R+ ?/ HIt may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,

. P* ]; M' E. w! W4 AAnd see the great Achilles, whom we knew.

Though much is taken, much abides; and though( c% a: K8 O. @) ]# \0 a

We are not now that strength which in old days

9 D# L, Q, ]8 WMoved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are/ c5 \% t1 a5 {

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will& s: b8 d/ R* P8 X  u

To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield.
