British Airways said on Friday it will suspend its London to Beijing route from October 26. Virgin will stop its flights to Shanghai the same month.
.
US-led sanctions mean that flights from UK and Europe have to go around Russia, which uses costly fuel, harms the environment, and annoys customers, who dislike the extended (10 per cent to 40 per cent) flight time.
.
Airline chiefs in UK and Europe are not happy – despite the anti-Russia campaign being US-led, it makes no difference to US airlines, which fly to Asia over the Pacific.
.
Asian airlines, which can fly over Russia, are already providing a faster service at a more affordable rate.
.
For comparison, Finnair's Helsinki-Tokyo service used to take about nine hours but now takes up to 13 hours. Lufthansa's revenue from Asia flights has also been suffering, Reuters reported.
.
Analysts say the US has been masterful in creating conflicts that leave it unharmed while damaging other countries and regions.
.
The European Council for Foreign Relations said in a report last year that  "Europeans have embarked on a process of self-vassalization, in which they sacrifice much of their independence in foreign policy to Washington in return for protection."
.
Washington uses the mainstream media to circulate narratives demonizing the top places on the US adversaries/ competitors list – China, Russia, Iran and others.
.
Even though many of these narratives are false (such as "China is on the verge of war with Australia", "China genocided its Uyghur minority") the fearmongering narratives work to increase America's global dominance and prevent the rise of a multipolar world.

Americans do NOT want their country to intervene if China reclaimed management over Taiwan, a new survey showed. Only 30 per cent said the US should get involved.
.
"A plurality of respondents (44%) strongly agreed (19%) or somewhat agreed (25%) that avoiding war with China is more important than Taiwan’s political autonomy from Beijing," said researchers from a US group called Defense Priorities.
.
The US has been spending American public money to turn the Chinese island into what the New York Times called "a giant weapons depot". But fully two-thirds of respondents said the Taiwanese government should be spending its own cash.
.
.
.
MISREPRESENTED
Taiwan is legally part of China according to the United Nations, the United States, and virtually all other countries – but the media misrepresents the situation by writing that China "claims" Taiwan. Taiwan's own constitution says the two places are a single country.
.
On the Ukraine-Russia war, most respondents (80%) indicated the U.S. should either make aid to Ukraine conditional, reduce aid, or cut aid to Ukraine entirely.
.
The researchers said Americans also believed the U.S. should use its leverage to encourage Israel to not expand the conflict into Lebanon by going to war with Hezbollah.
.
.
.
GOV-PUBLIC DISCONNECT
In summary, the survey shows a sharp and worrying gap between the American people's views on what their nation should be doing overseas--and what the political elite wants to do with public money.
.
"On key foreign policy questions—around the Ukraine-Russia war, a China-Taiwan contingency, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and more—there’s often a disconnect between Washington’s policies and the preferences of the American people," the study said.
.
Defense Priorities commissioned YouGov to conduct a survey of the foreign policy opinions of the American public between July 18 and 24, 2024.

AMERICA'S ENEMIES ARE WITHIN, TRUMP SAYS.
China and Russia are not America's most dangerous enemies, Donald Trump said today. The danger comes from bad people inside the United States. "And I say they're more dangerous than Russia and China," he said.
.
America need not fear the eastern superpowers, the former US president said in a live-on-the-internet discussion with Elon Musk. "If you have a smart president, a president that gets it, we are not in danger from those countries because they need us and they need our help."
.
America needs him as leader, so he can deal with other nations – and sort out the people causing trouble on the inside. "If you have a smart president, you're not gonna have a problem with them," he said.
.
.
.
.
LEADERS IN ASIA
Trump said that he personally knew the leaders of countries that the US had declared to be adversaries or competitors.
.
"Elon, I know every one of them and I know them well. I know Putin, I know President Xi. I know Kim Jong-un of North Korea. I know every one of them," he said.
.
"They're at the top of their game. They're tough, they're smart, they're vicious, and they're gonna protect their country. Whether they love their country? They probably do. It's just a different form of love, but they're gonna protect their country."
.
.
.
.
STRENGTH FACING STRENGTH
But the key is that they are strong leaders, and need to face a strong leader.
.
"But these are tough people at the top of their game," Trump said. "And when they see a Kamala, or when they see Biden, Sleepy Joe, they can't even believe it. They can't believe this happened."
.
.
.
.
ON THE EDGE OF WAR
Trump said that Biden had walked the US into the terrible current situation where Iran and Israel were on the edge of war.
..
He reported that when he had been leader of the United States he had kept the people of Iran poor so they had no money to cause trouble. He did it by threats and economic coercion of third parties.
.
For example, when Iran offered to sell oil to China, Trump stepped in. He said he told China: "If you buy oil from Iran, you're not gonna do any business with the United States. And I meant it."
.
The coercion worked, he said.  "And they [China] said, we'll pass. They didn't buy oil."
.
.
.
.
UKRAINE WAR
Trump also blamed Joe Biden for the Ukraine war.
.
"Biden started saying such stupid things," Trump said. "For instance, he said that it [Ukraine] can be a NATO country. Now, Russia, for as long as there's been NATO, has said, we're never gonna agree to that. And we go right up front and say that!"
.
He blamed the issue on Biden's low intelligence.
.
Joe Biden used to have a very low IQ, but now has no IQ at all, Trump said. "He had a low IQ 30 years ago, by the way, but now he might not even have a IQ at all."
.
The information the world is getting about the tragic situation in Ukraine is not the full story. "And it's so sad because many more people have been killed in Ukraine than you read about," Trump said.
.
.
.
.
HUGE ERROR
Biden and America's other modern presidents have made some huge mistakes, he said.
.
One of the biggest strategic errors they made? They "forced Russia and China together", he said.
.
.
.
.
ANALYSIS
It goes without saying that Trump was bombastic and ego-driven, and it is inevitable that the press will make lists of lies or mistakes.
.
But it is also undeniable that he was surprisingly honest in a number of cases.
.
For example, western leaders always parrot the  official line that the Ukraine war was entirely "unprovoked", while Trump's version, acknowledging Russia's concerns, comes across as far more reasonable.
.
Also, his indication that the Ukraine casualty figures are higher than the public is told is another departure from the official line, and is surely true.
.
.
.
.
ACTING LIKE A BULLY
Particularly refreshing is his frank admission that the US uses economic coercion on independent third party countries to get what it wants – and that America sees absolutely nothing wrong with making poor people poorer if that serves Washington's interests.

This is terrible, shocking, immoral behaviour – but we have all seen the US doing exactly this for many years. Trump is arguably the only leader who is shockingly honest about it.
.
And lastly – but most importantly – Trump clearly sees China and Russia as people to deal with, not as people to start wars against.
For all his obnoxiousness, if he prevents a world war, he may earn himself a tiny portion of redemption.
.
.
.
.
CHINESE SURPRISE
Although the discussion was audio only, images were published of Trump sitting at a desk, talking into his mobile phone.
.
Internet users quickly noticed that he was using a distinctive power storage device.
.
It was a popular Chinese device called a MagGo, and the manufacturer, Anker Innovations, saw its stock price soar this afternoon.
.
Without even knowing it, Trump was already working with China.

THE U.S. WEAPONIZED the concept of human rights to hurt China, using it for decades to harm attempts by Chinese organizations and individuals to create relationships with people outside its borders, a new study says.

It painted China as the motherlode of human rights violations, although this was not remotely true. Yet it was hard to get a more truthful account circulated, since the mainstream media provided a relentless flow of selected stories to reinforce the myth.

“Western NGOs, ostensibly concerned with human rights, disproportionately focused on alleged violations in China despite much worse abuses occurring elsewhere in the world,” says Why the World Needs China, an acclaimed 400-page study of the place of China in the modern world, by US author Kyle Ferrana.

“The U.S. government continually attempted to censure the PRC before the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, while ignoring other countries’ egregious abuses; and the Western press exclusively covered negative news in China, selectively focusing only on individual cases that were not representative of actual conditions.”

The double standards above were clearly identified in a study published in the Cornell International Law Journal, Ferrana points out—but the mainstream media’s unfair coverage continued unabated.

“Meanwhile, though it did have shortcomings, China’s actual human rights situation was far better than the average country in its income class in nearly every category,” Ferrana writes.

METICULOUS RESEARCH

And the human rights insight is just one observation in the US author’s new book,  a meticulously researched and wide-ranging review of what is really happening in China, and how its system of governance works, blending concepts of socialism and capitalism into something unusual—and intriguingly successful.

With a huge list of sources, both Chinese and Western, the author shows exactly how the Chinese keep surprising the world, starting with a powerful example. China, the land of old-fashioned black bicycles, rapidly transitioned into being the pioneer in next generation electric cars and buses – and at a global level, no less.

Shocked, the US responded by abandoning the fundamental principles of capitalism and competition to keep Chinese cars out.

TWISTED WORDS

Ferrana points out that reality can be distorted by subtly twisting words and concepts to create negativity. So Western journalists frame their reports on China with terms that have dark associations.

“There can be no criminals in China, only political prisoners who have been falsely accused; neither are these political prisoners kept in prisons, for there can be no prisons in China, only prison camps,” he writes.

Similarly, write-ups about mainland China, or Hong Kong, or Taiwan, divide everyone into good guys (pro-US) and bad guys (everyone else).

In the media: “If any Chinese people speak positively of the Party, this can only be the result of the government’s brainwashing. Those who speak critically of the Party, however, are always brave and clear-thinking truth-tellers, soon to be ‘disappeared’ by the government; when they are seen in public thereafter, their reappearance must somehow be ‘staged’ by the government.”

The author’s careful research and clarity of writing makes this an excellent example of professional reportage, and the achievement is impressive, given that Ferrana is an independent author with a background in US technology, not an academic in the China studies field.

REALITY IN HONG KONG
Hong Kong people will be surprised and grateful to find a US writer who understands their nuanced position, unlike the western establishment who tend to portray their home as an oppressed city filled with disappointed people who wanted their society to become like ‘Murica.

A 2019 poll by Reuters (a UK-originated news agency highly critical of China) found that only eight per cent of Hong Kongers expressed a strong desire for Hong Kong’s independence from China. While the western media uniformly blamed Beijing for the unrest in Hong Kong, only 12 per cent of Hong Kong people accepted that allegation.

INTERFERENCE

Ferrana points to the obvious political interference by notorious US groups such as the National Endowment for Democracy, which spent decades giving millions of dollars to anti-China groups.

By encouraging and financing the growth of pro-US groups such as the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions, the west could ensure the availability of China-hostile people to hit the streets—and then western reporters would interview them as if they represented the Hong Kong people, rather than the western paymasters discreetly financing them.

“According to the Berlin-based Latana Democracy Perception Index Report, by the spring of 2022 a two-thirds supermajority of Hong Kongers believed that Hong Kong did not need more democracy, and most held a positive view of mainland China,” Ferrana writes.

The violent arson-filled series of protests are to this day painted as being a noble series of “pro-democracy marches” but that was never the case.

“While there is some genuine desire for more democracy in Hong Kong, statistically, it is unlikely to have been the largest or even a very significant factor behind the mobilization,” Ferrana writes.

THE REAL ASIA

For people who live in Asia (about 60 per cent of the world’s population), the book will elicit grateful nods of appreciation. It is filled with observations that match what we see in front of our eyes – but which we can never find in the pages of the Economist or other international media.

But perhaps the most valuable point Ferrana makes is very simple. Yes, China differs from the west—but being “different” doesn’t automatically mean “bad”. In fact, given the mounting problems of the west, there’s plenty of evidence that China’s system of governance has lessons that the world can learn from.

China has taken much of what is good in capitalism, but retained a strong streak of socialist thinking—a healthy mix that keeps the economy on a middle path, and does wonders to alleviate poverty. The country prioritizes aims such as “common prosperity” using its firm control.

This enables China to get things done. Example:  The US is in a decades-long fight with itself about taking action for the environment, while China quickly got into a position where it is leading the world in the transition to clean energy, such as solar and wind, by a wide margin.

Why does the world need China? Because it is an experimental model of a different way of running society – and has had a number of successes in that role.

Why the World Needs China has just been published but is already being widely praised.

London-based author Carlos Martinez summed up the book with these words: “Ferrana creates a compelling and inspiring narrative about Chinese socialism and China’s place in the world, and in so doing, demolishes a range of popular myths: that China has ‘gone capitalist,’ that it is an imperialist power, that it is a serial human rights abuser.”

This book is a must-read. Even if you don’t read long books, buy it anyway – and keep it on your shelf to use as a reference if anyone brings up the topic of Hong Kong, Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan, or any of the other concepts that have been weaponized against China.

And when someone brings up “human rights”, send them to the link to this article.

I've said for years that the west's purported democratic systems are in many ways an idealistic pipedream. They certainly AREN'T the universal answer for every culture and society, whatever their stage of development. The US and Britain have long ago been subverted to become mere tools of a wealthy elite. And then the supposed 'ideals' behind them were also hijacked as weapons of empire and domination, just as the 'free' financial system has been. The US was a believer in 'free trade' and free capitalism in exactly the same way the Britain was in the 19th century - when it held all the cards and it used its power to FORCE others to 'trade' at the end of a gun barrel on terms that totally suited themselves. Britain very quickly became less enamoured with free trade once the US became economically dominant. Now the US practises precisely the same methods of extortion and coercion (military and economic) that they used against China and Japan in the 19th century, only with some elaboration and sophistication of methodologies and weapons. The same word, freedom, is used to enslave and exploit today as it was 150 + years ago. Funny how the west is ALWAYS the one that benefits from its benevolent spreading of 'freedom and human rights' where-ever it goes.

Every time someone says China commits human rights violation, I would ask them, exactly what are human rights, or what are the rights of being a human? Most of the time, they would say something like freedom of speech or rights to vote, and my response would be the fundamental rights of being a human are the rights to survive, i.e. have clean air & water, have food on our plates, have a shelter over our heads, have clothes on our backs, which all of these the Chinese government have succeeded in doing by lifting people out of poverty.  Referencing Maslow's hierarchy of needs, things like freedom of speech or rights to vote are level-4 needs (out of 5 levels), and China is slowly trying to fulfil these higher-level needs.  Whereas many western countries are so busy ensuring these higher-level needs are met, the basic needs or rights of their population have been totally overlooked.

HERE IS Kamala Harris' key foreign policy objective, as specified in her convention speech:

Keep them Asians below 'Muricans, and make sure we're the biggest, deadliest gunslinger on the planet.

NOT A JOKE.

Her keynote speech literally said she her aim was to ensure "that America, not China, wins the competition for the 21st century". (Why pretend it is fight when it isn't?)

She went on to say: "I will ensure America has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world."

"MOST LETHAL."

Then everybody gave a massive cheer.

This is insane.

And let's not forget – Trump has made the same two points.

Any nation founded on the idea that they MUST have global supremacy and MUST have the most lethal weapons to ensure that, is literally an anti-democratic group openly dedicated to crushing the rights of the majority of humanity.

America is scary and the people of planet earth, east and west, need to wake up.

US$9000 A DAY FOR USING VPNs
US senators want to copy Brazil's use of the law to ban free-wheeling social media AND slap massive cash fines on anyone who uses VPNs, it was reported today.
.
Twelve US senators last year put forward a bipartisan law called the Restrict Act, said Matthew Pines, a cybersecurity specialist working for SentinelOne in the United States. While it has not yet passed into law, the trend towards free speech restriction in the west could speed up adoption.
.
Brazil has from yesterday banned the use of x dotcom and threatens any member of the public who accesses it with a VPN to a fine of nearly US$9,000 a day.
.
The US act would also "have made using a VPN to access foreign ICT services deemed a natsec threat illegal & subject to significant penalties, including jail or fines," wrote Pines on x dotcom this morning. The writers of the US law named TikTok as the first media that would be banned from general access and VPN access.
.
VPNs are widely used around the world, including in China.
.
However, both Brazil and the US can force service providers to report public use of VPNs to the authorities.
.
The west is going through a period of cracking down on independent journalism, with critics of Israel a particular target.
