Coming to America: A History of Immigration and Ethnicity in American Life,关于19世纪爱尔兰移民的那部分。

James Phelan (1818-1900) is the kind of Irish Immigrant not usually discussed. He emigrated to New York and moved on to Cincinnati, where by 1848 he had a wholesale grocery business worth perhaps $40,000. Drawn to San Francisco by the gold rush, he made his first fortune selling provisions to miners and then became a real estate magnate and one of the city's first millionaires. His son, James D. Phelan, became a United States senator and a leader of the anti-Asian movement. For a while father and son had officies in the modern "Phelan block" that the father built, where, as the story goes, the elder Phelan was once asked by the building's cigar counter operator why he smoked five-cent cigars although his son smoked twenty-five-cent ones. "Because," Phelan snapped back, showing a mindset that only Protestants are supposed to have employed, "he has a millionaire for a father and I don't."
