China has sent warplanes to its newly declared air defence zone in the East China Sea, state media reports.

D, F. `- B" R$ K& _The vast zone, announced last week, covers territory claimed by China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

/ M* M; `( V9 j3 y% sChina has said all planes transiting the zone must file flight plans and identify themselves, or face "defensive emergency measures".

) A4 }4 P# A3 A$ Q4 p: @) oThe zone includes islands known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, which are claimed by Japan, China and Taiwan.) W& i( j& D" p% q8 e8 ^; @
4 w! {9 ?( H3 w' \Japan controls the islands, which have been the focus of a bitter and long-running dispute between Japan and China.

China's move has been condemned by the US and Japan.* ^$ b3 m* ^3 j: X$ r
) T6 q; B$ b9 Y+ a% E* j" g( G4 iAmerica, which called the move a "destabilising attempt to alter the status quo in the region", flew two unarmed B-52 bombers through the zone unannounced on Tuesday.- c+ J* |# d ^9 V9 l
