From Orikron: "China had zero kilometers of high speed rail at the beginning of 2007.
By the end of 2022, it had 42,000; or enough for a full loop around the Earth with 2000 kilometers to spare.
All built within the time it takes for a kid to go from pre-school to college. And they are even planning to reach 70,000km by 2035 (in addition to 130,000km of conventional tracks), including in some of the harshest desert, mountain, polar (technical classification of the Tibetan Plateau) and tundra environments on Earth.
Eventually, they want to connect all major city clusters with 1000km/h trains, making the furthest distances between them a matter of 2-3-4 hours travel.
Imagine going from Lisbon to Moscow or from New York to LA and returning on the same day with plenty of time to spare while never needing more than a train ticket.
Domestic planes are already outmoded for most trips before even taking into account all the bureaucratic, security and meteorological delays involved in air travel." |
