The United States spied on the United Nations’ leader in direct contravention of international law, it was revealed yesterday. Detailed private communications between UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and his staff are detailed in papers circulating in the Pentagon files leak.
.
The western media is downplaying what may be among the most serious of the revelations of the files leaked by Jack Teixeira, an airman who recognized that his government was behaving as a dark force--and who was arrested yesterday.
.
Acts of espionage on the United Nations are illegal under numerous international laws, and have been since at least 1946.
.
However, from 1993 onwards, several critics (including many inside the US) revealed that America had come to see itself as an autocratic global power above international law and not subject to the rules of the United Nations.
.
This concern has been shown to be on target many times over. Before the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, US spies were revealed to have secretly penetrated offices of senior UN staff.
.
In 2010, Julian Assange’s Wikileaks organization exposed a cable which instructed US staff to spy on figures at the UN, including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council delegations of Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom.
.
Files released by Edward Snowden showed that in 2012, the NSA had infiltrated the UN’s private internal video conferencing system.
.
In this sense, many will say that Teixeira is carrying on the work of Assange and Snowden, revealing the autocratic heart of darkness within the world’s most frightening military power. |
