Eric Stone: How much does the government control prices in China?
Nuri Vittachi:
I understand how someone immediately jumping to talking about Chinese government’s controls can be irritating, but I also understand that Eric Stone was asking a genuine question and deserves a straight answer.
Basically, China operates as a mixed economy, just like most other countries, with prices set by the markets, except for a limited list, just like most other countries.
The Chinese govt has campaigned against hoarding and profiteering for many years. I think in general businesses in China (and Singapore and Hong Kong and Japan) may be more likely to co-operate with their Asian-style governments than would be the case in some western nations, but there’s not a huge difference. For example, last year the Chinese government wanted the coal industry and the steel industry to keep prices stable. The govt issued general remarks about the long term benefits of keeping prices down – in other words, they encouraged them to avoid raising prices but did not force them. |
