This week on Sinica, I chat with Michael Berry of UCLA, who translated the Wuhan writer Fang Fang's controversial "Wuhan Diary: Dispatches from a Quarantined City." While praised by some, the book – as well as the translation – drew fire of many Chinese people both in China and overseas who believed it was an act of betrayal, and that translating it committed that sin of "airing the family's dirty laundry" – 家丑不外扬.
