可怜的滚筒铅版

我们的老祖宗发明了活字印刷，可一直是雕虫小技，因为传统的雕版印刷才是印刷的主流，只到工业革命由蒸汽动力驱动的铅字压铸和铁制滚筒的发明，才实现了真正的机械化印刷，从而掀起一场世界范围内的印刷技术革命，大大促进了报纸时代的来临。

The steam engine (not seen here) used a belt to drive the wheel (at bottom centre). The use of steam power greatly increased the rate at which printing could be done. 这是这家印第安纳州地方小报社的地址和办公楼，报纸创刊于1947年，现在仍在运营：
可喜也可悲的是人类如此伟大的发明，也只是延续了一百来年，很快被互联网和无纸印刷给取代了。即便是在博物馆内，也难觅其踪。
