@fred_pompermayer got this awesome photo of me speed climbing the Nose with @tommycaldwell a few days ago - Fred and his partners were climbing Triple Direct and it was the second morning that we were passing them. This time he was prepared with his camera! Lots of parties take pics with their phones as we climb through - it’s rare to pass a real photographer with a real camera. He really did El Cap justice!
Date night with @sannimccandless at the Producers Guild Awards for @freesolofilm. My first time wearing a tux (thanks @jaredleto for loaning me one - even if I felt like I was going to rip the seams apart all night). Is a tux something that a man should own or just rent from time to time?
So stoked for the whole #FreeSolo team on the Oscar nomination. If you've seen the film or any of the behind-the-scenes footage that's come out lately you know it took a village. Chai, Jimmy, Mikey, Clair, and the whole crew did an incredible job capturing the beauty of Yosemite and my lifelong dream of soloing El Cap.
A huge thank you as well to all the audiences that have come out and continue to come out to support FREE SOLO in the US and the U.K.!
@jimmychin just gave me this picture from @freesolofilm of one of my practice burns up El Cap with @tommycaldwell. It perfectly captures the offwidth experience - face contorted, whole body straining, barely moving... it’s a lot like the process of touring with a film! We’re in the 20th week of release in theaters and it’s opening on @imax all across the country. For anyone who hasn’t seen it yet you have until Feb 7th - the big screen really improves the experience. Though even IMAX isn’t quite as big as the real thing...
What a way to finally end the @freesolofilm tour! We won an Oscar!!
Technically, @sannimccandless and I didn’t win anything since we were only the subjects of the film. But we kept the awesome envelope anyway :)
The actual Oscars go to directors @chaivasarhelyi and @jimmychin and producers @peconic21 and Shannon Dill. They each did an incredible job in helping to craft Free Solo into the Best Documentary of the year!
Of course there’s an enormous team of talented people who worked on the film (many of whom I got to hug last night and celebrate with).
I guess I just want to say thank you to everyone who worked on the film. And thank you to everyone who’s watched and enjoyed the film.
It’s been a wild ride.
Thanks.
