THE SLAUGHTER IN GAZA must stop IMMEDIATELY, the world said yesterday.
.
In a stunning blow to the US and Israel, the planet’s representatives joined hands at the United Nations Security Council to demand an immediate halt to the slaughter and destruction in Gaza.
.
All countries present voted YES to a binding demand, except the United States, which abstained from the Monday vote. This caused the bill to finally pass without being vetoed.
.
.
.
.
TOO LATE
“Today’s resolution comes too late,” said Chinese ambassador Zhang Jun. More than 100,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed or injured, in a program of slaughter and destruction that has shocked the world.
.
And while the US continues to make accusations against China, the “eyes of the international community are open and discerning”, Zhang added.
.
.
.
.
'UN DEMANDS IMMEDIATE HALT'
The resolution demanded an immediate halt to the operation that has displaced the majority of the population of Gaza. The full text of the main demand is as follows:
.
“THE SECURITY COUNCIL… DEMANDS an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire, and also DEMANDS the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address their medical and other humanitarian needs, and further demands that the parties comply with their obligations under international law in relation to all persons they detain.”
.
.
.
.
UK SHOCK ADMISSION
Also for the first time, the UK voted with China and other leading nations.
.
But British officials told journalists that this did not change UK policy, which was to never oppose Washington DC demands.
.
The UK Guardian reported officials saying that “Downing Street policy was not to adopt positions at the UN that were directly at odds with Washington”.
.
This confirmed a widely accepted belief that UK sovereignty on matters of foreign policy has been effectively transferred to the United States.
.
.
.
.
INTERNATIONAL CRIME
Later today (Tuesday), a UN human rights expert is set to call for Israel to be placed under an arms embargo on the grounds of halting an ongoing genocide.
.
Politicians and media in “the global west” have avoided using that word, as it would implicate them in the worst of all crimes, as they continue to supply arms and expertise to the Israeli army.
.
Polling in multiple countries have shown that the public in western nations oppose the continuing supply of weapons, but the leaders are standing with Israel in military terms on the apparent orders of the United States.

WHY I AM RESIGNING FROM THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT
By Annelle Sheline, PhD.
.
SINCE HAMAS’ ATTACK on October 7, Israel has used American bombs in its war in Gaza, which has killed more than 32,000 people — 13,000 of them children — with countless others buried under the rubble, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
.
Israel is credibly accused of starving the 2 million people who remain, according to the UN special rapporteur on the right to food; a group of charity leaders warns that without adequate aid, hundreds of thousands more will soon likely join the dead.
.
.
.
.
U.S. IMPLICATED IN GENOCIDE
Yet Israel is still planning to invade Rafah, where the majority of people in Gaza have fled; UN officials have described the carnage that is expected to ensue as “beyond imagination.” In the West Bank, armed settlers and Israeli soldiers have killed Palestinians, including US citizens.
.
These actions, which experts on genocide have testified meet the crime of genocide, are conducted with the diplomatic and military support of the US government.
.
.
.
.
US HUMAN RIGHTS CREDIBILITY VANISHED
For the past year, I worked for the office devoted to promoting human rights in the Middle East. I believe strongly in the mission and in the important work of that office.
.
However, as a representative of a government that is directly enabling what the International Court of Justice has said could plausibly be a genocide in Gaza, such work has become almost impossible. Unable to serve an administration that enables such atrocities, I have decided to resign from my position at the Department of State.
.
Whatever credibility the United States had as an advocate for human rights has almost entirely vanished since the war began.
.
Members of civil society have refused to respond to my efforts to contact them. Our office seeks to support journalists in the Middle East; yet when asked by NGOs if the US can help when Palestinian journalists are detained or killed in Gaza, I was disappointed that my government didn’t do more to protect them.
.
Ninety Palestinian journalists in Gaza have been killed in the last five months, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. That is the most recorded in any single conflictsince the CPJ started collecting data in 1992.
.
.
.
.
I SPEAK FOR MANY
By resigning publicly, I am saddened by the knowledge that I likely foreclose a future at the State Department. I had not initially planned a public resignation. Because my time at State had been so short — I was hired on a two-year contract — I did not think I mattered enough to announce my resignation publicly.
.
However, when I started to tell colleagues of my decision to resign, the response I heard repeatedly was, “Please speak for us.”
.
Across the federal government, employees like me have tried for months to influence policy, both internally and, when that failed, publicly.
.
.
.
.
HORRIFIC DISREGARD FOR LAW
My colleagues and I watched in horror as this administration delivered thousands of precision-guided munitions, bombs, small arms and other lethal aid to Israel and authorized thousands more, even bypassing Congress to do so.
.
We are appalled by the administration’s flagrant disregard for American laws that prohibit the US from providing assistance to foreign militaries that engage in gross human rights violations or that restrict the delivery of humanitarian aid.
.
The Biden administration’s own policy states, “The legitimacy of and public support for arms transfers among the populations of both the United States and recipient nations depends on the protection of civilians from harm, and the United States distinguishes itself from other potential sources of arms transfers by elevating the importance of protecting civilians.”
.
Yet this noble statement of policy has been directly in contradiction with the actions of the president who promulgated it.
.
.
.
.
OUR CLAIMS ARE A MOCKERY
President Joe Biden himself indirectly admits that Israel is not protecting Palestinian civilians from harm. Under pressure from some congressional Democrats, the administration issued a new policy to ensure that foreign military transfers don’t violate relevant domestic and international laws.
.
Yet just recently, the State Department ascertained that Israel is in compliance with international law in the conduct of the war and in providing humanitarian assistance. To say this when Israel is preventing the adequate entrance of humanitarian aid and the US is being forced to air drop food to starving Gazans, this finding makes a mockery of the administration’s claims to care about the law or about the fate of innocent Palestinians.
.
.
.
.
THE WAR IS OUR WAR
Some have argued that the US lacks influence over Israel.
.
Yet Retired Israeli Maj. Gen. Yitzhak Brick noted in November that Israel’s missiles, bombs and airplanes all come from the US.
.
“The minute they turn off the tap, you can’t keep fighting,” he said. “Everyone understands that we

Too many leaders, on campus and in government, are failing to uphold the First Amendment rights they claim to champion, Will Creeley argues. https://theatln.tc/dqftJeVe

“Last week, from New York to Texas, cops stormed college campuses clad in riot gear,” Creeley writes. “They were there to conduct mass arrests of students protesting the war in Gaza.” At the University of Texas at Austin, students were arrested for “trespassing,” but don’t appear to have violated any rules; the charges were dropped the next day, “a telling indicator of the disturbingly authoritarian response.” Texas Governor Greg Abbott also called for students joining in the “hate-filled” protests to be expelled, but, Creeley notes, “no First Amendment exception exists for ‘hate-filled’ speech.”

“As the legal director of a First Amendment advocacy nonprofit, I teach students across the country that the government can’t silence speakers because of their beliefs, even—and perhaps especially—if those beliefs are unpopular or cause offense,” Creeley writes. “That’s a foundational principle of free-speech law … In our pluralistic democracy, everyone has their own subjective idea of what, if any, speech is too ‘hateful’ to hear … And empowering the government to draw that line will inevitably silence dissent.”

“Free speech is not without carefully designated exceptions, and these exceptions are important but narrow,” Creeley adds. Threats and intimidation, discriminatory harassment, and violence are not protected, nor is taking over a campus building. And schools can maintain reasonable “time, place, and manner” restrictions on speech; overnight encampments are probably not protected. “But the enforcement of these rules must be evenhanded and proportionate,” Creeley writes. “The use of force should be a last resort.”

“Students nationwide are watching how the adults who professed to care about free speech are responding under pressure. And they are learning that those adults don’t really mean what they say about the First Amendment. That’s a dangerous lesson,” Creeley continues at the link in our bio. “‘Free Speech 101’ starts here: The First Amendment protects an enormous amount of speech, including speech that some, many, perhaps most Americans would find deeply offensive.”

OPEN VERBAL WARFARE is breaking out between the International Criminal Court and the United States.
.
Judges want to halt what they call “a plausible genocide” in Gaza. But the US has put forward two arguments to stop the court in its tracks—yet both excuses fail to hold water, diplomats and legal experts say.
.
The ICC wants to issue arrest warrants for senior officials of Israel and Hamas, in the face of the nightmarish situation in Gaza, where tens of thousands of civilians, mostly women and children, have been killed.
.
The US is calling for the ICC to withdraw the plan.
.
An unprecedented statement issued by the ICC, calling for a halt by unnamed persons trying to interfere with its work, has raised the tension levels. The Presidency of the Court is held by Judge Tomoko Akane.
.
.
.
.
TWO U.S. ARGUMENTS
The US has two arguments against proceeding. The first is that issuing arrest warrants would “delay a ceasefire”—but some diplomats and commentators say this is a transparently false excuse: the US has repeatedly opposed all attempts to bring about a ceasefire. It’s the one country that cannot use this excuse, they say.
.
Washington’s second argument is that that the ICC has no jurisdiction over Israel.
.
But legal experts say this is false. “Palestine is a state party to the ICC, and the ICC has accepted that it has jurisdiction over crimes committed in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem,” Gerhard Kemp, a professor of criminal law at the University of the West of England Bristol Law School, told the Anadolu news agency.
.
Legal specialist Mark Kersten told Middle East Monitor that the ICC is able to “very clearly, logically and legally exercise jurisdiction in this case.” The ICC has territorial jurisdiction over Palestine, which includes the Gaza Strip.
.
.
.
.
RICH FRIENDS
But the US is getting allies to push the “ceasefire” argument. It has enlisted the G7 “club of rich nations”, to push the excuse to the Hague, according to a report in Bloomberg today.
.
The ICC issued a statement last night telling unnamed people to stop trying to influence it. It said that the court’s “independence and impartiality are undermined, however, when individuals threaten to retaliate against the Court or against Court personnel should the Office, in fulfilment of its mandate, make decisions about investigations or cases falling within its jurisdiction.”
.
The court added: “Such threats, even when not acted upon, may also constitute an offence against the administration of justice under Art. 70 of the Rome Statute.”
.
.
.
.
HISTORY OF THREATS
The US and Israel have a history of having threatened the Court. During the Donald Trump US presidency, the country issued sanctions against ICC staff and threatened to sanction their families too.
.
“We have seen US policymakers and lawmakers say the same, that they would support literally sanctioning the only independent permanent international criminal tribunal in the world,” Kersten told the Middle East Monitor.
.
.
.
THEY WILL BE IGNORED
Israel’s leader Benjamin Netanyahu has already said he will ignore any action the International Criminal Court takes, Reuters reported.
.
Israel and the United States have a long history of ignoring or opposing resolutions from international bodies, even when all other nations are united against them.
.
Some commentators have characterized the present split over Gaza and Israel as a Battle Royale between the global community’s international law, and the US’s “rules-based order” an undefined concept that is used to criticize countries which fail to toe the US line.
.
Next: Analysts say that if the ICC goes ahead with its warrants, but they are ignored, both the court and the US/ Israel will see their reputations badly damaged.
.

GAZA’S REPRESENTATIVES invited China, Russia and Türkiye to stand with their community in any forthcoming peace deal with Israel and the west.
.
The Palestinians want the three non-western nations to be “co-guarantors” of the eventual pact that ends the fighting, said the head of the Hamas international relations office, Musa Abu Marzouk, in an interview on Sunday, reported by the UK Guardian newspaper.
.
.
.
.
EXTRAORDINARY IMPLICATION
This is extraordinary. The fact that the Palestinians want the Chinese, Russians and people of Türkiye to stand as their official allies, shows the depth of reputational damage done to the Western allies by their roles in the slaughter and destruction of Palestinian society – and let’s not forget, the west is enabling acts considered illegal in international law, according to some of the west’s own lawyers.
.
.
.
.
NINE STEPS
But diplomats say it’s no surprise, as China has been quietly working behind the scenes to bring about peace in Gaza. Here are nine steps the Chinese took.
.
.
1. China looked ahead to an eventual peace pact by last week inviting Fatah, the secular, technocratic rulers of the West Bank, and Hamas, the traditionalist Islamic rulers of Gaza, to Beijing for talks on joint Palestinian leadership for the future. The talks went extremely well.
.
.
2. China this week issued a joint statement with France, urging Israel to cancel the planned offensive in Rafah, the southern part of Gaza where hundreds of thousands of civilians are sheltering. The US made similar noises but undermined themselves by continuing to send weapons to the IDF for the assault.
.
.
3. China refused Washington’s request to tell the Houthi rebels in Yemen to stop their Red Sea disruption campaign in which they largely targeted Israel-bound ships with US and UK origins.
.
.
4. Two of the biggest shipping organizations in the world, mainland China’s Cosco and Hong Kong’s OOCL, suspended all business links with Israel over the treatment of Palestinians.
.
.
5. Chinese diplomats invited Fatah and Hamas to meet again in Beijing later this month to work on a unity deal for shared Palestinian leadership.
.
.
6. China quietly amplified the warm Middle Eastern diplomatic relationships it made in March last year when it successfully negotiated an end to a nine-year dispute between Saudi Arabia and Iran. It intends to use what it learned, and the contacts it made, to help the Palestinians.
.
.
7. China consistently stood with Gaza in United Nations’ attempts to bring about a ceasefire, and backed statements on the conflict from international organizations such as the World Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. The Palestinians won't forget this.
.
.
8. China provided cash assistance to Gaza and despatched food, medical supplies, and other essential humanitarian aid through Egypt.
.
.
9. Most excitingly, both mainland China and Hong Kong have created strong politics-free relationships with Islamic communities in the Middle East that make them good partners for rebuilding Gaza—both in terms of fixing physical infrastructure, and in creating financial and other organizations. There are already 19 Belt and Road Initiative projects in the Middle East and North Africa.
.
.
.
.
COMMON ERROR
The result of all this, of course, will be a move towards a more balanced, genuinely multipolar world. This will horrify the US. But the rest of the humanity is likely to see it as a positive.
.
It’s interesting to note that western commentators who touch on this topic inevitably talk of China as trying to “replace” the United States as a political player in the Middle East.
.
This is a very common but fundamental error. China doesn’t operate that way. For the US, every move is part of strategic geopolitical machinations. China simply does trade with people, trying to create relationships through finding win-win deals.
.
“China will not be a geopolitical player in the Middle East,” said the Global Times in an editorial.  “The increasing influence of China is totally accumulated through goodwill and cooperation, without any machination.”
.
Their message: Trade, not politics, please.
.
.
.
.
MIDDLE EAST NOW HAS CHOICE
They may not be entirely guileless, but their pragmatic approach will make China a better partner in the Middle East, said Fudan University professor Shen Yi in the same newspaper.
.
“Instead of solving the problem, the US usually creates the problem, then formulates a policy based on its own interests and needs, taking the lives and wellbeing of the people in the Middle East as the tool to solidify its hegemony," he said.
.
"All parties in the Middle East know the US’s intentions very well, but they didn’t have other choices before. Now, with China’s mediation, they naturally will choose the proposal for peace.”
.
