Mt.Everest, C4/South Col. 8000m. 22.5.19

On my way back from the summit, the view cleared only briefly for me to get this glimpse of the Camp4 with Mt.Lohtse in the background. The yellow tent cluster in the death zone. One of the harshest "living" conditions at a camp, while still being in a "safe" set up because it is flat and rocky and not perched on an icy slope like C3.

Mesmerizing view, but very difficult conditions. We had to hang out here an extra night on the 20th when we reached. The conditions were too stormy that evening to take on the final leg of the summit push. We elected to stay tucked under the "shield" of our nylon tent and make an attempt the following night. Turned out to be the right thing to do, but could have turned out any way. One can never say. Everest decides.
Notice the human on ice bottom left to the center. That's how little we are! The edge of the ice is actually a bump with a drop of about 60-70feet down to a lower slope where the camp is. By the time one is walking on this patch, safety seems assured. The night ahead is difficult with extreme exhaustion, limited supplies, scarce oxygen, and crowded tents.
