During our one week in the Dolomites we had a lot of bad weather. Luckily for this photo, dramatic clouds with long exposure made it so much better. My goal here was to create a car light trails photo by merging the base photo with a lot of other pictures (to add the car lights) which I took later in the evening. Most of the editing was done in Lightroom, while I had to use Photoshop to merge the images and add some subtle glow to the car lights.
1. Basic Adjustments
After activating the Lens corrections, I switched the camera profile to Adobe Standard as this helps to make the base image a little brighter. Also, I added quite a bit of temperature to fix the white balance of the photo. Still, the picture was super dark, so I added exposure, whites and blacks and slightly dropped the highlights to get back details from the sky. For a clean look I added texture and clarity.
2. Local Adjustments
I wanted the sky to be darker, so I added a graduated filter over it and dropped the exposure, increased the blacks and the clarity. Also, I added a graduated filter over the foreground to make it darker and thus make the car light trails more visible. Again, I dropped the exposure, decreased the whites and increased the highlights.
3. Color grading
This shot was too saturated for me, so I dropped the green, yellow, aqua and blue saturation slightly. For the split toning, I simply added a blue, cold color to the shadows which works great for those kinds of dark photos.
4. Photoshop
After the editing for the base image I applied the same steps to the car light trails photos and opened them as layers in Photoshop. To blend them all together I switched the blending mode of the car light layers to ‘add’.
Finally, I added a new layer on top, switched the blending mode to hard light and used a warm brush to carefully paint over the lights to add glow. |
