Ernesto "Che" Guevara's officially recognized birthday is June 14, 1928. Born and trained as a doctor in Argentina, Che distinguished himself as guerrilla strategist and leader in the Cuban Revolution in which he was responsible for its greatest military victory in the Battle of Santa Clara. He oversaw land reform and served variously as Minister of Industries, Finance Minister and President of the National Bank. In 1965 he criticized the relationship between the USSR and the Third World and disappeared from public view, preparing for a return to guerrilla activity first in the Congo and then in Bolivia where he was captured and executed by Bolivian Special Forces working with the CIA.
