40歲那年，未曾結婚生子的法蘭茲 卡夫卡，行經柏林一處公園，遇到小女孩。小女孩正為弄丟心愛的洋娃娃而啜泣，她和卡夫卡一道尋找，但無果。
At 40, Franz Kafka (1883-1924), who never married and had no children, was walking through a park one day in Berlin when he met a girl who was crying because she had lost her favourite doll. She and Kafka searched for the doll unsuccessfully.

卡夫卡約她次日碰面，一起回來找洋娃娃。他們依然找不到，卡夫卡便將洋娃娃「寫」的信交給女孩，上面說「請不要哭泣，我展開旅程去看世界。關於我的經歷，會寫信告訴妳」
Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would come back to look for her.
The next day, when they had not yet found the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter "written" by the doll saying "please don't cry. I took a trip to see the world. I will write to you about my adventures."

故事就此啟開，直到卡夫卡生命最終之際。每當碰面，卡夫卡朗讀洋娃娃精心書寫的信件，裡頭的冒險和對話，女孩覺得很可愛。
Thus began a story which continued until the end of Kafka's life.
During their meetings, Kafka read the letters of the doll carefully written with adventures and conversations that the girl found adorable.

最後卡夫卡把洋娃娃帶回柏林(他買的)。「這一點都不像我的洋娃娃」女孩道。卡夫卡交出洋娃娃的信，寫著「長途旅行改變了我」。小女孩遂緊抱新的洋娃娃，帶她去幸福的家。
Finally, Kafka brought back the doll (he bought one) that had returned to Berlin.
"It doesn't look like my doll at all," said the girl.
Kafka handed her another letter in which the doll wrote: "my travels have changed me." The little girl hugged the new doll and brought the doll with her to her happy home.

一年之後卡夫卡過世。又隔了許多年，已成年的女孩發現洋娃娃裡藏著信，小小的紙箋附上卡夫卡的簽名，寫道「妳喜歡的東西或許會消失，但即使改換容顏，愛終將歸來」
A year later Kafka died.
Many years later, the now-adult girl found a letter inside the doll. In the tiny letter signed by Kafka it was written:
"Everything you love will probably be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way."
