The Battle of Carrhae and defeat of Rome during Romans invasion of Iran

Perhaps, almost everybody has heard about Julius Caesar, Achilles, Hercules, Trojan war and Battle of Marathon due to propaganda supplied by some western mass media and highly biased and distorted Hollywood movies such as 300, but only few people have heard of bravery of Iranian general Suren and Battle of Carrhae between Iranians and Romans.

Suren Spahbed also known as Rustaham Suren (53 BC) was a Parthian commander and leader of House of Suren during the 1st century BC. Souren is best known for defeating the Romans in the Battle of Carrhae, in which Parthians decisively defeated a numerically superior Romans invasion force under the command of Marcus Licinius Crassus.

The battle of Carrhae is commonly considered as one of the earliest in series of battles happened between traditional rivals Iranian Empires and Roman Empire for more than 700 years (92 BC-627 AD). Under Suren’s command, Parthians decisively defeated a numerically superior Roman invasion force under the command of Marcus Licinius Crassus.  Despite being heavily outnumbered (10000 Parthians VS 35000 Romans), the Romans were decisively defeated and Crassus himself was killed and most of Romans were killed or captured during invasion of Iran.

The Parthians were one of the three major groups of Aryans (Medes, Parthians and Persians) who immigrated and settled Iranian plateau in around 2000 BCE and later established the Parthian Empire, also known as the Arsacid Empire, which was a major Iranian political and cultural power in ancient Iran (247 BC-224 AD).

Someone asked me a question about the references I’ve used for developing my Facebook posts regarding historical events and ancient Persia (Iran).

In relation to this question, reading books about ancient history and literature, with emphasis on Persian literature, has been my passion from my childhood. I had a Facebook account created in 2008 with around 5000 followers in which I used to post my ideas about variety of different subjects in both Persian and English. For no apparent reason, I decided to delete my old Facebook account last year and since then, I’ve been posting on current page less often.

Having been a PhD student and researcher for almost 10 years, I pay a meticulous attention to details for writing a paragraph and providing citations. As I mentioned before, although I’m an Environmental toxicologist and a Chemist, reading ancient history has been my passion for quite a long time. For developing paragraphs about historical events, I usually use variety of different sources from the various websites e.g Wikipedia, ancient history websites, newspapers etc. However, all the references provided as citation in my posts are accurate and reliable. In instance, I’ve referred to Herodotus, Hidemari Koch and Will Durant and other influential and popular historians whose books and articles have been widely used by many researchers around the world over the past decades. Hence, to cut a long story short, my posts on Facebook are a summary of information compiled from various online sources e.g websites, newspapers as well as popular history books as mentioned In text.
