There is endless criticism of China for its press controls. Freedom, liberty, etc
But Beijing’s position is informed by experience with exactly this kind of Bannonite media cynicism. Beijing does not believe democracy - that is, a system where the peoples voices are represented in government and their needs guide official action - is possible with a private profit-seeking media. Because media does not serve the people, it serves itself. And even sincere journalism will be drowned under manipulative shit from special interests. And thats where we find ourselves.
China does not have a free press. it also has a population that trusts vaccines, accepts climate change, abhors war, and knows an economy is more than just a stock market. America’s “free” press has resulted in a far less informed , actually misinformed , population.
Fight me about which one you prefer. But dont deny the evidence of the different approaches.

“I call this “manufactured” because it’s the consequence of a deliberate strategy. It was distilled almost perfectly by Steve Bannon, the former head of Breitbart News and chief strategist for Donald Trump. “The Democrats don’t matter,” Bannon reportedly said in 2018. “The real opposition is the media. And the way to deal with them is to flood the zone with shit.”” |
