Throwback to last week when many of the northern sections of the Parkway were graced with a magical snowy scene! This week we're seeing temperatures in the 60's. What a difference a week makes!

We'll give you that winter can be harsh, with freezing temperatures, high winds, ice and snow creating dangerous conditions. On the other hand, winter can also be a peaceful time when activity slows down. Winter is literally quieter, as many species of bird migrate to warmer climates where food sources are more abundant, aren't around to delight us with their songs.
Winter is also a reminder of the creative ways flora and fauna adapt to survive. Many black bears retreat to their dens to conserve energy by slowing their breathing and heart rates significantly (hibernation). Many plants and deciduous trees slow their growth and transfer nutrients to their root systems to conserve energy. Even we humans adapt, by putting on our parkas and gloves and breaking out the hot cocoa!
